Episode 5 — “The Video”
The next afternoon started normally.
Too normally.
Chinedu had just returned home from the hospital to shower and rest briefly when his phone suddenly exploded with notifications.
Messages from friends.
Missed calls.
WhatsApp forwards.
At first, he ignored them.
But then Emeka called directly.
“Guy, where you dey?”
“House. Wetin happen?”
“Have you seen the video?”
“What video?”
There was silence for two seconds.
Then Emeka spoke carefully.
“Something happened at Amaka’s hotel.”
Immediately, Chinedu sat upright.
“What happened?”
“A guest was caught with one of the female staff.”
His chest tightened instantly.
Before he could ask more questions, another message entered his phone.
A WhatsApp video.
Caption:
“See what these hotel girls are doing.”
His hands suddenly felt cold.
Slowly, he clicked it open.
The video showed chaos inside one of the hotel corridors.
People shouting.
Security men dragging a half-dressed female staff member while an angry woman screamed insults nearby.
Apparently, a married man had lodged in the hotel secretly with the worker, only for his wife to trace him there unexpectedly.
The video was messy.
Embarrassing.
Ugly.
And unfortunately…
It was already spreading everywhere online.
Chinedu’s heart pounded harder as he watched.
Then suddenly, for less than two seconds, Amaka appeared in the background trying to control the situation with other management staff.
That was all.
But social media didn’t care.
People were already generalizing the entire hotel.
Comments flooded everywhere:
“All of them na ashawo.”
“No decent woman works in hotel.”
“This is why men fear marrying them.”
Chinedu dropped the phone slowly.
And just like that…
All the fears he had been battling internally returned at once.
Harder.
Louder.
Ugly.
His mind immediately became restless again.
“What if…”
“What if Amaka is only different on the surface?”
“What if everybody warning me was actually right?”
He hated himself for thinking that way.
But fear had already entered fully again.
Then suddenly, his mother’s earlier words echoed in his head:
“A man must protect his home before problems start.”
Before he knew it, he was already calling Amaka repeatedly.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
His chest tightened further.
Then finally, after the fifth call, she picked.
Her voice sounded exhausted.
“Hello?”
“Where are you?”
“At work.”
“What happened there?”
Amaka sighed deeply immediately, as though she already knew why he was calling.
“You’ve seen the video.”
“So it’s true?”
“Yes, but—”
“So those things actually happen there?”
There was silence briefly.
Then Amaka answered honestly.
“Yes. Sometimes.”
That answer pierced him badly.
“You see?!”
“Chinedu, calm down and listen first.”
“No wonder people keep talking!”
“Can you allow me explain?”
But Chinedu was already emotional now.
“What exactly are you still explaining? Married men and staff sleeping together inside the same hotel you work!”
Amaka’s voice became firmer.
“One staff member made a stupid decision. That doesn’t mean everybody there is the same.”
“But it’s happening right under your nose!”
“And corruption happens in banks every day. Does that mean every banker is corrupt?”
“That’s different!”
“No, it’s not.”
Both of them fell silent again.
The tension between them was heavy.
Then Amaka spoke quietly.
“You know what hurts me?”
“What?”
“You were finally beginning to see me differently… until one scandal reminded you of every stereotype again.”
Chinedu rubbed his forehead angrily.
“You don’t understand how this looks.”
“No. You don’t understand how this feels.”
Her voice cracked slightly now.
“Do you think I’m happy today? Do you think decent women working there aren’t embarrassed too?”
Chinedu remained quiet.
Because honestly…
He hadn’t even considered that.
Amaka continued:
“Since morning, customers have been insulting female staff anyhow. Online blogs are dragging all of us together. Even people that know nothing about us are suddenly acting like judges.”
Her breathing sounded shaky now.
“But the painful part is that even you immediately started looking at me with suspicion again.”
That sentence landed heavily.
Because she was right.
The moment he saw that video, trust disappeared instantly and fear took over again.
And he hated himself for it.
Still, confusion swallowed him.
“How do I ignore something like this, Amaka?”
“You don’t ignore it. You separate individuals from environments.”
He sat quietly.
But his emotions were still fighting inside him.
Then suddenly, Amaka asked softly:
“If I worked in a hospital and one nurse got caught sleeping with a doctor… would you assume all nurses are prostitutes?”
“No.”
“If one female banker dates politicians for money, does that make all female bankers irresponsible?”
“No.”
“Then why is hotel work automatically different?”
Chinedu had no immediate answer.
Because deep down…
He knew society had programmed him to think differently about hotel workers.
Amaka’s voice became tired again.
“I’m exhausted, Chinedu.”
He closed his eyes.
“Amaka…”
“No, honestly.”
There were sounds of people shouting faintly behind her at the hotel reception.
Probably reporters or angry customers.
“This whole thing has already humiliated many of us enough today. I can’t also keep defending my humanity to the man I love.”
Her voice finally broke completely.
And hearing her cry softened something inside him immediately.
Because suddenly…
He remembered something important.
Throughout all this drama…
Amaka herself had never once given him any genuine reason to doubt her character.
Not one.
Everything came from assumptions.
Stories.
Fear.
Other people’s actions.
And maybe…
That realization was finally beginning to change him completely.
But before he could speak again, Amaka said quietly:
“I need space for now.”
The call ended.
And for the first time since they met…
Chinedu genuinely feared he might lose her forever.
To be continued…
