Episode 1 — “The Promise He Made in His Heart”
When Chinedu met Amaka for the very first time, he already knew where she worked.
She didn’t hide it.
In fact, it was one of the first things she told him.
“I work at De-Lords Hotel,” she had said casually during their second outing.
Most girls would probably have lied or avoided mentioning it immediately, especially because of the way society looked at women who worked in hotels.
But Amaka spoke about it openly.
“I’m the operations supervisor there.”
Chinedu remembered nodding slowly that day, pretending it didn’t bother him.
But truthfully…
It did.
Not because Amaka looked irresponsible.
Not because she behaved badly.
Actually, she was one of the most decent ladies he had ever met.
The problem was the stories he had heard growing up.
Stories of rich married men lodging in hotels with side chicks.
Stories of girls collecting tips from customers in exchange for “extra services.”
Stories of hotel workers dating politicians and businessmen secretly.
In Nigeria, once people hear “hotel worker,” many minds automatically jump to one conclusion.
And Chinedu was no different.
Still, he continued dating her.
At first, he told himself it was temporary.
“She’s probably just managing until something better comes,” he thought.
Then months passed.
Amaka never behaved suspiciously.
Never hid her phone.
Never disrespected him.
Never demanded unnecessary money.
In fact, many times she would finish night shifts exhausted and still find time to check up on him.
“How was your day?” she’d ask.
“Hope you’ve eaten?”
Little by little, Chinedu genuinely fell in love with her.
But there was one thing he never told her.
Deep inside his heart, he had already made a silent decision.
The moment marriage became serious…
She would leave the hotel job.
To him, that was obvious.
He assumed Amaka also understood it without needing too much explanation.
After all, many women change jobs after marriage.
So in his mind, it wasn’t a big issue.
Unfortunately, he was wrong.
—
One evening, they sat together inside a restuarant after church.
Rain had just fallen, and the weather was cold.
Amaka rested her head lightly on his shoulder while they shared malt and food.
That was one of the moments Chinedu truly realized he wanted to marry her.
Not because she was perfect.
But because life felt peaceful around her.
Then Amaka smiled suddenly.
“My mum likes you already.”
Chinedu laughed. “I’ve not even come officially.”
“She said you look responsible.”
“That means I should start saving bride price money.”
Amaka laughed loudly.
For a moment, everything felt perfect.
Then Chinedu spoke.
“You know when we marry, you’ll leave that hotel work.”
The smile on her face disappeared almost immediately.
Slowly, she sat upright.
“Leave the work?”
“Yes now.”
“Why?”
Chinedu looked surprised by the question.
“Why again? Because you’ll be married.”
Amaka stared at him carefully.
“Wait… so all this while, you’ve been expecting me to resign?”
“I mean… eventually, yes.”
“And you never said it?”
“I thought it was obvious.”
Amaka gave a short dry laugh.
“Obvious to who?”
“Amaka, be honest with yourself. Which husband will truly feel comfortable with his wife working in a hotel?”
Her face changed immediately.
There was pain in her eyes now.
“So after one year together… this is still how you see me?”
“That’s not what I mean.”
“Then explain what you mean.”
Chinedu adjusted himself uncomfortably.
“It’s not about you exactly. It’s just the environment.”
“The same environment you met me in?”
“That was before things got serious.”
Amaka folded her arms.
“So now that you want marriage, suddenly my job is a problem?”
Chinedu sighed.
“Look, I already have plans. I can open a supermarket for you. Or a cosmetics shop. You won’t stress again.”
“But I didn’t ask for that.”
“I’m trying to take care of you.”
“No,” she replied quietly. “You’re trying to control me.”
That statement annoyed him instantly.
“How is this control?”
“Because you already decided what my future should look like without even asking what I wanted.”
Chinedu became defensive.
“So you want to keep working around strange men till midnight even after marriage?”
Amaka looked at him for a long moment.
Then she asked softly:
“Do you trust me at all?”
He answered immediately.
“Yes.”
But even he knew the answer wasn’t completely true.
Because trust without peace of mind is incomplete.
And every time he imagined his wife inside hotel corridors attending to male guests late at night…
Something inside him tightened.
Amaka stood up slowly.
“You know what pains me most?”
“What?”
“You knew my job from day one.”
She picked up her handbag.
“If you could never accept it, you should’ve left long ago instead of waiting until I loved you.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving Chinedu sitting there alone.
For the first time since their relationship started…
He genuinely began wondering whether love alone was enough for marriage.
To be continued…
