The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards after the Chiefs lost safety Juan Thornhill, and added some linebacker depth with the introduction of Drue Tranquill.
Edwards concluded the 2022 season with 82 tackles, 52 of which were solo, and 1 sack. He also grabbed two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Edwards finished the year productively with 10 tackles in the 31-14 playoff defeat.
Tranquill received a Pro Football Focus coverage rating of 76.7 last year, giving the Chiefs a far superior overall athlete and producer in coverage than Darius Harris, who was not offered a contract despite being a restricted free agency.
With Willie Gay Jr. and Nick Bolton as the other base starts, Tranquill may fill in and give more ceiling and depth as Leo Chenal develops. Patrick Mahomes has welcomed his two new weapons as he prepares to defend the Super Bowl title.
Mahomes retweeted the first message both Edwards and Tranquill posted to the Chiefs’ fans.
